The months of April and March are full significant Baháʼí observances; in particular the Baháʼí Naw-Rúz period, which offers the perfect time to discuss the Badí Calendar. Use this worksheet to accompany a discussion on Ayyám-i-Há, the month of fasting, Naw Rúz, and/or the 12 days of Ridván (all of which occur consecutively).
Note: the worksheet includes dates for 2023. If you wish to modify these, use this editable Microsoft Word document . The original font used in the worksheet is Jost (freely downloadable).
Worksheet
Two documents are provided below for printing:
- Activity Worksheet: Each participant will need a copy of this page.
- Activity Tiles: These are glued onto the worksheet inside the colored boxes. Four sets of tiles (suitable for up to four participants) are provided on a single page. Print multiple copies of this page if you have more than four participants.
Make sure to cut out the tiles and scramble them before giving them to the participants as they are provided in the correct sequence.
Solution
The tiles above are provided in the correct sequence for filling in the blanks. This ordering should reveal the following facts:
- Ayyám-i-Há (26 February – 1 March 2023): A period of celebration devoted to charity, gift-giving and festivities.
- The month of fasting (2 – 20 March 2023): The Bahá’í New Year, the first day of the year in the Badi calendar.
- Naw Rúz (21 March 2023): The Bahá’í New Year, the first day of the year in the Badi calendar.
- The 12 days of Ridván (21 April – 24 May 2023): A period of celebrations that marks the declaration of Baha’u’llah.
The three questions in the middle of the worksheet have the following answers:
Question | Answer |
---|---|
How many days are there in a Baha’i month? | 19 |
How many months are there in a Baha’i year? | 19 |
How many days does it take for the earth to go around the sun? | 365 |
The final multiplication question should read 19 × 19 = 361 days
